Note: Have your account administrator confirm your account is set up properly before you use the application.

Access Firm Settings

To access Firm Settings:

  1. From the toolbar, click your Profile icon.
  2. From the drop-down, select Setup.
  3. From the Setup left navigation, click Firm Settings.

The Firm Settings screen opens, displaying tabs atop the screen.

Accounting Tab

We recommend you have your bookkeeper review these settings.

Chart Of Account Defaults

Default Accounts for Client Costs Posted to Matters
  • Select the default account for matter costs.
Default Legal Fee Income Chart Of Account
  • Select the default account for your legal fee income.
Default Trust Transaction Account
  • Select the default account for trust account transactions. Only 2300 and 2310 and their sub-accounts will appear in this drop-down.

Account Books Settings

Reporting Method
  • Select either the cash or accrual tax reporting basis for your firm.
1st Month of Fiscal Year
  • Select the first month of your fiscal year.
1st Month of Income Tax Year
  • Select the first month of your income tax year.
Dates through which books are closed
  • Specify book closing date to prevent accidental edits in closed duration.

Default Accounts for Sales and Service Taxes

  • Set your default accounts for sales and services taxes.
  • For Canadian firms, Enable per-matter province and tax settings is checked by default.
    HST, PST, GST, QST will display the system defined options even when you have selected a province under the Regional tab.
  • You can choose to configure a different COA from the drop-down beside each field. Learn how to apply Multi-Province Settings.

Paid Taxes on Disbursements Incurred as Agent

  • Enabling this setting allows users to enter GST/HST/PST on Disbursements Incurred as Agent without the taxes becoming part of the firm's ITC.
  • Specify a default account for posting taxes paid to a vendor on a disbursement incurred as agent.
  • Separate from firm paid taxes on regular disbursements
  • Automatically enabled with the activation of Canada-specific account rules under Setup > Regional Settings > Canada Specific Account Settings.

Negative Soft Cost Expense

  • Enabling this allows timekeeper to record negative expense entry.
